Memory #16: Coffee with the Ex

Form: A loaf of bread (0/1)

So, another memory from Velma's days trying to live a 'normal life'. She's driving north for a job interview (and keeps getting sidetracked). She made a pit stop for sugar and gas at a convenience store/gas station and is trying to figure out how to manage her haul and find her keys, when she senses someone land behind her.

It's Aaron/Action Dude! And Velma's heart goes doki-doki because FEELINGS. But this is really weird, since he's in costume and she's in civilian wear. So she tells him that if he wants to talk, he can meet her at the Starbucks down the street in civies, rather than his blindingly bright blue-and-orange costume. And he's buying her coffee. She also interrogates him about if this visit is self-motivated or if he was sent by Marketing, and if she was at risk of being arrested. He doesn't answer. So she lays it down that he can either have coffee with her or quit bothering her, and also why the hell didn't he call? So in between the 'kwaa, Action Dude' there's also 'Aaron you jerk' and 'why is my life hard?'

There are already people taking pictures of the superhero as Velma drives off for a place to park her car so she can keep her date at Starbucks. And deal with the tide of feelings, because Velma and Aaron's relationship is a Big Mess of Its Complicated.

She doesn't expect Action Dude to keep their date. Well, actually, she tells herself it's probably a trap, so stop feeling these feelings. But he's there, in a suit and glasses ensemble that practically screams 'I am unsure of how to dress when not in uniform'. He also bought her coffee AND blueberry coffee cake. Which has to be for her, because he is allergic to blueberries. She questions if he's trying to drug her for Marketing (which he denies) and then they banter a bit about 'determining it's me versus all the comic-book options for doubles', which is apparently an old subject for them.

But they get down to business. Apparently one of Vel's former jobs was at a coffee shop that got dragged into a plane of eternal shadow, and toys carried her unconscious body to safety. Which breaks the laws about Vel using her powers in public without a license, even if it was probably a relfex. Still, Vel freezes up here, since she knows that if the Super Patriots Inc. want to, they can make her life a living hell for this, since it was technically against the law. Vel pretty much tells Aaron to not mention that, and brings up their past relationship.

Aaron tells her that they (well, he) really didn't know where she was until she started throwing down powers and Marketing started looking into it, and that's why he volunteered to check in on her. In hopes that he could defuse the situation. Apparently Dave was the one who ratted her out when she fought him in Isley, because he was worried she'd gone supervillain (you know, like Dave himself did). Velma tells Aaron that she's fine, really, and that he shouldn't try to feign concern when Yelena tried to kill her years ago. Aaron told her that Marketing would love to have her back on the team.

Oh, more feelings. Vel tells him that she is never working for the Super Patriots Inc. again, and thanks him for the coffee, then stalks out.

What Joy Learned
Mostly the details mentioned, except the coffee shop sucked into shadow, Joy knew about. But this is a jolt to the feelings, especially taking it after the memory with feelings for Tag.

Joy knew she had a crush on Aaron when they were kids, but didn't know it blossomed into her first romantic relationship, and one that was serious enough that she had all these complicated feelings about Aaron when she hadn't seen him for years.

But Velma hated the Super Patriots Inc. more than she loved Aaron, and Aaron is a bit of a follower and far too trusting, so he isn't exactly taking initiative (also, you know, brainwashing). He seems to think they can be a big, happy family together like when they were kids, if he can just talk Velma and Dave to come back.

Also, Velma in the memory seems to tie Yelena's trying to kill her to Aaron somehow, which might lead Joy to take the same (wrong) conclusion.

I also find it hilarious that I'm doing a write-up about Velma's love of blueberry breakfast foods right after a game where Barnaby mentions he prefers blueberries to strawberries to her. Clearly this is a sign.
