Memory #1: Escape from the Holiday Special
Memory: Escape from the Holiday Special
Earned: Day 221 (Three of Three's Balance Game)
Form: Memories come in the form of brass feathers. Spin the quill between your hands/paws/tentacles to receive the memory. (2/3 uses left)
This memory happens when Velveteen is around 12 or so, and is new to the superhero business and the marketing blitz that it involves. The Super Patriots Inc. are into holidays, provided they can find a sanitized commercial version that won't offend many people. So we have a holiday special about winter and Santa and such and trying to corral a number of junior superheros. And Vel's team (the Junior Super Patriots West Coast Division) are the new kids on the block, so they're getting picked on by the other kids. Add in that Vel is pretty cranky and hates her makeup (mostly that they think ringlets are a good look for her) and basically being treated as a performing bunny. Thus, they've barely started filming and she's already trying to hide from her handlers.
Someone surprises Vel by telling her that her handler from the Marketing Division is gone. That someone is Jackie Frost, daughter of Jack Frost and the Snow Queen and a super Vel's own age. Jackie is probably the first (non-villainous) super Vel has met that isn't working for The Super Patriots Inc. - and Vel can tell, because Jackie can dress in hot pink Hot Topic-esque clothing if she wants to without someone checking that all her clothing matches her Marketing-approved color scheme. Jackie has been told by her parents to keep a low profile so Marketing doesn't bother her, but apparently that means 'hijack Mom's magic mirrors to borrow superheros'. Vel thinks this is a far better thing to be doing than to stay here, as long as her friends/teammates can come.
So, Vel goes to find her friends without being noticed. She has three of them: Sparkle Bright (a photon manipulator), Action Due (a flying brick), and the Claw (he's half-lobster). Both Sparks and Action Dude are being picked on by older kids with similar power sets, and Sparks looks like she's about to cry (which pisses Vel off -- Sparkle Bright is Vel's best friend, and also a bit sensitive, so people who make Sparks cry make Vel want to hit things). The Claw has been mostly avoiding a superhero with cooking-themed powers because... well, that won't end well. They agree that this is better than hanging around, and the Claw opines that Jackie doesn't look like much of a threat.
Jackie meanwhile is having mirror trouble, and her ice powers are on the fritz, and Vel can hear that their handlers have figured out they're all missing. Vel steps up and pretty much asks the mirror nicely. Surprisingly this works, and they hold hands and jump through. Vel is surprised and alarmed by the destination: Christmas Village.
What Joy Learns
* So, this is the first glimpse of Vel's childhood. It's enough to gather that she has some kind of special powers, since all her friends did, as does everyone on set. She may be a superhero, since she asks Jackie if she's a supervillain.
* She also now recognizes her teammates and knows their powers and temperaments. (Sparkle Bright is kind of shy and naive, Action Dude is easygoing, Claw is a natural pessimist and even more cranky than Vel.) And holiday-themed costumes. Also Jackie, who isn't a teammate but becomes a friend.
* Speaking of, why is she dressed like a rabbit? Joy doesn't get her name or power set here, besides that her theme is apparently 'brown bunny', and even when they put her in a green and white holiday themed costume, they have to keep the ears and tail and brown trim and so on. The magic mirror could be a clue to her powers, or it could be a red herring.
* There's a bit about parents, when Action Dude mentions his dad. For some reason, she, Sparks and Action Dude are away from their parents because of being superheros. (The Claw isn't, since his dad was the one who gave him the lobster powers.)
* For some reason, she dreads going to Christmas Village.
Effects
- Deference to authority.
- Like of dressing up if it involves looking adorable.
+ Curiosity about her life.
+ Friendship and teamwork.

"We could get out of here."
"How?" The idea was appealing. It was just that it also happened to be completely impossible.
"I can use Mom's magic mirror to teleport home. She totally lets me use it whenever I want."
